![[HERO] The Simple Trick to Lower Anxiety Right Now: Why Rhythms Matter More Than Rules](https://cdn.marblism.com/VgfSiWEWppu.webp)
Do you ever feel like your “to-do” list for your spiritual life is actually making you more stressed? You wake up, and immediately the internal drill sergeant starts shouting: “Read three chapters of the Bible. Pray for thirty minutes. Don’t forget to journal. Also, stop being anxious because the Bible says ‘do not be anxious,’ so if you’re worried, you’re failing.”
It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
At In Process In Faith, we talk a lot about the journey. We believe that faith isn’t a destination you arrive at once you’ve checked enough boxes; it’s a living, breathing process. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, I want to share a secret that has completely changed the way I look at navigating stress and faith: Rhythms matter more than rules.
When we trade our rigid rules for life-giving rhythms, we create space for the Holy Spirit to move, and we actually give our nervous systems permission to calm down. Let’s dive into why this shift is the “simple trick” you need to lower your anxiety today.
The Rule Trap: Why Rigid Structures Often Fail Us
We love rules because they give us a sense of control. If I follow these ten steps, I will be a “good” person, a “good” Christian, and a “good” mom. But for many of us: especially those trying to cultivate a holistic lifestyle for women: rules become a heavy yoke.
Rules are fragile. If you miss your 6:00 AM prayer time because the baby was up all night or you had a late work call, the “rule” is broken. Once the rule is broken, shame enters the room. You feel like you’ve failed, which spikes your cortisol, increases your heart rate, and: you guessed it: sends your anxiety through the roof.
Rhythms, however, are different. Think of a heartbeat or the ocean tides. They aren’t about perfection; they are about a pattern. If the tide is a little late or a heartbeat skips a beat, the system doesn’t collapse. It just finds its way back to the flow.

Understanding Your Nervous System and Your Soul
One of the biggest breakthroughs in my own journey was realizing that my anxiety wasn’t just a “spiritual problem.” It was a physiological one, too. God designed our bodies with incredible complexity, including a nervous system that is constantly scanning the environment for safety.
When we live by strict, perfectionistic rules, our body stays in a state of “high alert.” We are constantly worried about failing or not measuring up. This keeps us in a sympathetic nervous system state: fight or flight.
By shifting to faith-centered routines that focus on rhythm, we signal to our brains that we are safe. We move into the parasympathetic state: rest and digest. This is where we can actually hear the “still small voice” of God. You see, it’s hard to experience spiritual surrender when your body thinks it’s being chased by a bear.
The Simple Trick: Rhythms Over Rules
So, what does “rhythms over rules” actually look like in real life? It looks like grace. It looks like being “in process.”
1. Breath as a Prayer Rhythm
Instead of a rule that says “I must pray for 20 minutes,” try a rhythm of breath prayer. Your breath is the most natural rhythm you have. When you feel that spike of anxiety, take a deep breath in and whisper a name of God (like Abba or Provider). Exhale and release your worry (I trust You).
Research shows that deep, rhythmic breathing is one of the fastest ways to regulate your nervous system. By pairing it with prayer, you are engaging your body and your spirit simultaneously.
2. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique
When anxiety hits, we often get stuck in our heads: looping about the future or the past. Grounding brings you back to the present moment, which is the only place you can actually meet with God.
- 5 things you can see.
- 4 things you can touch.
- 3 things you can hear.
- 2 things you can smell.
- 1 thing you can taste.
This isn’t a “rule” you have to do perfectly. It’s a rhythmic tool to help you settle. If you want to dive deeper into why finding this kind of quiet is so important, check out our post on why stillness is not a setback.

Spiritual Surrender: Letting Go of the “Shoulds”
A major component of a holistic lifestyle for women is the concept of spiritual surrender. Often, our anxiety stems from trying to carry things that weren’t meant for our shoulders. We try to control our children’s futures, our career paths, and even our own sanctification.
Surrender isn’t a one-time event; it’s a daily rhythm.
In my own life, I’ve had to learn that it’s okay to be “in process.” I don’t have to have it all figured out today. God isn’t looking for a polished version of me; He’s looking for a present version of me. When we surrender our need to be perfect, our anxiety naturally begins to ebb away. We realize that the pressure is off.
Creating Your Own Faith-Centered Routines
If you’re ready to ditch the rules and find your rhythm, here are a few ways to start building faith-centered routines that actually lower stress:
- Morning Sunlight and Scripture: Instead of forcing a long study, just step outside for five minutes of sunlight and read one verse. Let the rhythm of the rising sun remind you of God’s new mercies.
- The “Kitchen Sink” Prayer: Use mundane tasks as a cue. Every time you stand at the sink to wash dishes, let that be a rhythmic reminder to practice gratitude.
- Evening Release: Before you sleep, practice a “brain dump” where you write down everything stressing you out, and then literally hand that paper over to God in prayer.
If you’re looking for tools to help you stay grounded in these rhythms, we have some beautiful resources in our shop designed to help you stay “in process” without the pressure.

Why It’s Okay to Be “In Process”
I want to remind you of something important: You are allowed to be a work in progress.
Society tells us we need to be the “finished product” at all times. Social media feeds are full of women who seem to have their routines perfectly curated. But that’s not reality. At In Process In Faith, we celebrate the messy middle. We celebrate the days when your “rhythm” is just whispering “Help me, Jesus” while you fold laundry.
Navigating stress and faith is a lifelong journey. There will be seasons where your rhythms feel effortless and seasons where they feel like a struggle. That’s okay. The goal isn’t a perfect track record; the goal is a deeper connection with the One who created you.
If you’re feeling “off” in other areas of your life, like your relationships, it might be because your internal rhythms are out of sync. You might find our post on why you feel off in relationships really helpful as you look at your life holistically.
Final Thoughts: Just Take the Next Breath
If you are feeling anxious right now, I want you to stop reading for a second. Put your hand on your heart. Feel that beat? That’s a rhythm. It’s happening without you even trying.
God’s grace is exactly the same. It is a constant rhythm that underpins your entire life, whether you feel it or not. You don’t have to earn it with rules. You don’t have to keep it with perfection. You just have to lean into it.
Lowering your anxiety isn’t about adding more to your plate; it’s about changing the way you approach the plate you already have. Swap the heavy rules for the light, easy yoke of Jesus’s rhythms.
